Don’t overlook Lake Erie! That’s what we often hear from people purchasing small boat insurance in Ontario. Lake Erie may still suffer from a bad reputation due to its over-pollution in the 1970s and 80s, but the modern Lake Erie is far cleaner and a great place to go boating.
However, it’s somewhat unique as the Great Lakes go, so we’ve got a few tips for boaters looking to enjoy this under-appreciated lake.
Things to Keep in Mind When Exploring Lake Erie
Bring Your Paperwork
Quite a lot of Lake Erie is on the US side of the border, and the majority of the points of interest are on its western side – i.e., around Ohio and Michigan. More so than some of the other Great Lakes, it’s important to bring your documentation for US border officials, if asked.
It’s Shallow
Lake Erie is by far the shallowest of the Great Lakes, and can be very shallow in parts. Unless you have a relatively small boat, you’ll want to obtain a good topographical map and refer to it. There are a lot of sandbars and other areas which could snag a larger vessel.
It’s the Warmest Lake (at least in the summer)
Since it’s so shallow, Erie is the fastest Great Lake to warm up and stay warm. This means it’s a great option for swimming, at any of the great beaches that surround it. Just keep an eye on the water, as it’s prone to algae blooms you don’t want to swim in.
It’s also, interestingly, the lake that’s the first to freeze in the winter as well. So, plan accordingly.
Keep an Eye Out for “Bessie”
While not as well-known as some other beasts, Lake Erie is reputed to contain its very own monster. Sightings go back to the 1700s! However, chances are it is just people spotting large sturgeons, which are common in the waters.
